Eating Out in Auckland
We have our favourites, but here are some places that Concrete Playground recommends, several of which are within walking distance of our Takapuna rental properties. Takapuna Beach Café is great for brunch, and we love The Commons for an afternoon drink or dinner. Award-winning chef Josh Emett has also recently opened Madam Woo, an eclectic Asian restaurant on Lake Road.
If you have a car, Paper Moon in Mairangi Bay is a lovely spot for dinner – or grab fish and chips from the local takeout and head down to the beach.
Viaduct Harbour | Wynyard Quarter
If you are staying in one of our properties in the Viaduct, you won’t have far to walk. Auckland's Viaduct area and Wynyard Quarter are bursting with quality cafes and restaurants. The choice is huge - two of our recommendations are Italian restaurant Baduzzi on North Wharf and Soul Bar & Restaurant in the Viaduct.
Federal Street | Midtown
This is an up and coming area with some awesome new eateries and tapas bars, well worth a visit - especially if you are headed to a live show in one of the nearby theatres. Federal Street is a semi-pedestrianised road beside SkyCity, home to several high quality restaurants including Depot, Masu and The Grill.
Close by on Wellesley Street is the City Works Depot which also has a number of dining choices – Odettes Eatery comes recommended for brunch.
Britomart | Takutai Square
Developed in preparation for the 2011 Rugby World Cup tournament, Britomart has become the new place to be seen. Some of our best-known chefs have opened restaurants in this rejuvenated district – our picks include Café Hanoi, Ostro and Ortolana. The areas of Imperial Lane and O'Connell Street nearby are also worth investigating.
After some quieter years, Auckland’s oldest suburb has come alive again with some recent new additions to its dining scene. Start with drinks at Non Solo Pizza then dinner at Woodpecker Hill. Or vice versa - either way you won’t be disappointed! Rosie on Gladstone Road is a popular café for breakfast or lunch and the French Farmers Market held every weekend is not to be missed.
Oh, so much choice! Ponsonby is a huge favourite on Auckland’s nightlife scene and is home to many great bars and eateries. To get you started, check out Mekong Baby, MooChowChow, SPQR, SidArt and Ponsonby Central. There are also many great BYO restaurant options for those on a tighter budget – we love Mutiara Malaysian and Sawadee Thai.
